A Place in Time

The piece

Under the theme of places, I created my grade 12 final piece. Over the course of two months, I collected trash from various places. Starting out with on my walk to and from school, I had a bag full of items. When the snow fell and the ground was blanketed in white, I turned to indoor places. School, my home, and the library were the easiest options. 

It wasn't until I was at a friend's house, helping her move, that I came across some really interesting pieces of trash. Talking it over with my teacher, I decided to depict images of the very places I had gathered my media from.

One constant feeling throughout grade 12 was a sense of nostalgia for hometown of Karachi. Only a few months out of there, images of a different place halfway across the world stuck strongly. And so, each image I created was put together using trash found in Mississauga, but what they depicted was the same general name, but from another place. The four aspects I chose were Environment, Education, Home, and Companionship.

I had the idea. Now, I had to create the actual piece, and only had a little more than a week to do so. Every spare moment was devoted to the making of the boxes. Each took an afternoon and a half, the creation of each box calming me more.

Initially the box form existed so the cardboard base would not bend, but this lent to the way I set them up finally and unintentionally. 

The first, of course, was the hardest, as I had no idea where to begin. Glue was running out; my space was cramped and dark. A few burns along the way were a small price to pay for the satisfaction the finished product gave.









For environment I chose to show a common sight on a Karachi beach. Camel rides are a norm, as are the decorative saddles that adorn the creature. The part of me yearning for a warm beach in an inland snowy city had to create this picture.

Home and education feature my house and school in Karachi, respectively. Companionship depicts my two best friends from Karachi.
